<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX SHAKES IT UP - February 20, 21, 27 & 28: The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m treading the boards, being a thespian, acting—albeit for maybe four minutes—in Director Laura Iacometta’s production of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. Geoff is in the show too. He plays Moises Kaufman—a big part. We are both so excited to have roles in this important show. Thank you to Laura and OffBook Productions for casting us. The story: In 1998, Matthew Shepard, was tied to a fence and brutally murdered in Laramie, Wyoming. The Tectonic Theater Project brought Matthew’s story to the theaters across the country. Ten years later, they are back with a sequel: The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. The Tectonic team went back to Laramie to see how the town was faring since the widely publicized hate-crime. Had the town changed, was there still a lot of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment, how were the murderers? What they found was shocking, as was the media coverage from outlets like 20/20 that claimed the murder wasn’t a hate crime but a drug deal gone bad.” Tickets are on sale now at https://offbookproductions.ludus.com. I and the rest of the talented company hope you can come and support community theater. Thank you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX SHAKES IT UP - February 22, 2022: Writers Read, THE LOFT at City Winery</image:title>
<image:caption>I have wanted to read at a Writers Read (www.writersread.org) event for ages. And on February 22, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. I will! Yay! I’ll be telling my story “Immune Systems” with a group of amazing storytellers at THE LOFT at City Winery, 25 11th Ave., NY, NY. The event’s theme is “Body Language: True Stories of Illness, Recovery, and Discovery,” and the program is a collaboration with Bellevue Literary Review. Here—right from the Writers Read and City Winery websites—is what it’s all about: “This special collaboration marks Bellevue Literary Review’s 25th anniversary year. Join us for an entertaining afternoon as talented writers from across the country take the stage to present their true, personal, five-minute stories—literary work exploring the extraordinary demands placed upon the human body and mind. “Hosted by Dr. Danielle Ofri, Editor-in-Chief of BLR and Edward McCann, founder of Writers Read, this curated program of crafted narratives is raw, cathartic, and surprisingly funny—original stories presented by a cast of writers who prove that even in our most vulnerable moments, we possess an undeniable resilience. “Relax and enjoy the afternoon with us! While writers share their tales, you can share food and wine at your table with friends. Reception follows. Doors open 12:00 for lunch.” Tickets are on sale now at https://tickets.citywinery.com/event/writers-read-bellevue-literary-review-present-bo-kzr352. Hope to see you there!</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX SHAKES IT UP - Back To School, January 7, Rutherford High School</image:title>
<image:caption>Jess Katz is a superstar teacher at Rutherford High School. I had a chance to see her in action on January 7. She invited me, Andrew Katz, Laura Iacometta and Joan Katz to speak to her English class on “Public Speaking in the Real World: How Communication Shapes My Career.” The event was held in the school library and was the best experience. Read all about it. It was an honor to take to the podium with Laura and Joan and with Andrew by video. One of the coolest things about the day was that each of us took a different angle on the importance of public speaking, and I think that gave the students a rounded perspective on the subject. I love sharing my work experiences with students getting ready for college or their careers. The icing on the cake is when they ask questions and share their creative writing and art work. I love having those conversations, and they leave me feeling optimistic about the future. Thank you to Jess, her class, the Principal and Assistant Principal at Rutherford High School for being there and for your kind words about our presentations. How I wish I’d had an English teacher like Jess back in my school days at Alfred G. Berner High School. Thank you, Ms. Katz for the invitation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On my long list of my favorite bookstores, Hudson Valley Books For Humanity (HVBFH) in Ossining, NY is right at the top. It sits at 67 Central Avenue and has a bit of the “Flourish & Blotts” from Harry Potter about it. That’s to say, it’s magical. You walk in and fall in love with the place, so much so for some people that they have moved to Ossining to be closer to this bookstore. All this magic is due to its co-founders Amy Hall and Rob Lowenthal—husband and wife—the store’s team and their shared commitment to maximizing the life of every book, community outreach and activism, carefully curated artisan items and events and sustainability.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX IS THANKFUL</image:title>
<image:caption>A good deal of that HVBFH magic was in the air on November 5 for “Once I Wore…An Evening of Stories about the Memories We Wear.” Amy Hall, Joyce Markovics, Rochelle Udell, Betsy Kates, Amy Alpert and I shared stories about clothes we once wore and the place each piece holds in our hearts. Dorothy Johnson riffed on the theme with her paintings that elevate what we wear to high art. Audience members with a clothing story to tell stood up for the open mic. Funds were raised and festive clothing collected to benefit IFCA (Interfaith Council for Action). Cookies, brownies and blondies were munched. Drinks sipped. Books bought, and the store rang with community and good will. The night ended on a real high, so yes, we plan a repeat performance in 2026. Watch this newsletter for our next theme and date—and until then, please drop by Hudson Valley Books For Humanity. It is most definitely worth the trip.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I first met Janette Pardo the Assistant Director of the Wayne Public Library in 2024 when she brought me in to do my “Telling Your Story” workshop. This year, I was back for the library’s Lunchbox Learning Series on November 12. Janette, The Friends of the Library and the group who showed up for some storytelling and fun were fantastic. The highlight of the day was seeing Tatiana, who took my 2024 workshop, in the room and having her show me the collection of stories she has finished since the workshop. Wow! Thank you, to Janette and the Wayne Public Library, everyone who showed up on the day and Tatiana for sharing her work with me. She absolutely made my day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Thank you, Rita Wollner, for another fun day at J Jill Garden State Plaza. A really good sale brought in lots of shoppers—which is always good for me and my book sales. Selling books is always good, but I think the best things about being in the store are spending time with the staff and chatting with the women shoppers who stop by my table to talk books and all sorts of things. I get to meet a lot of teachers, writers, book lovers, librarians and parents and grandparents shopping for the young people in their lives. I love it. And, of course, I do a little shopping. That’s always part of the fun. Thanks again, Rita, Becky, Lorraine, Sherry and Maryann for a terrific day and for supporting Chatterbox and helping me to connect with the community. And ladies, you are my heroes. I have fully come to appreciate how hard it is to stand on your feet all day! In the crowd on the day were Dr. Timothy Lynch, President of the College of Staten Island; Dr. Christina Tortora, Chair of the English Department; Jacqueline Lamberti, Associate Director of Alumni Relations & Annual Giving; Cheryl Adolph, Interim Executive Director for Institutional Advancement and the CSI Foundation Inc.; Carol Beraradi, President, Friends of CSI and National Overseer of the Garibaldi Meucci Museum and six students from the English Department. An extra big shout-out goes to Carol. She invited me to read from Chatterbox at the Garibaldi Meucci Museum in April and to be the speaker on October 5. I can’t thank her enough. A bunch of my dearest friends, Paula, Dee, Mark and Maggie, and of course, my hubby, the man who gets me through all these events, Geoff, were also there to cheer me on, enter the raffles (and win) and enjoy some delicious Italian food. Thank you, Osteria Santina. And thank you to my friends who couldn’t be there on the day but donated to the scholarship fund. This event was near and dear to me. CSI changed my life. There would have been no Chatterbox or a writing career if I hadn’t attended and graduated from the college.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX WANTS - October 9, 2025, Bradley Beach Library — An Evening With An Author</image:title>
<image:caption>College buddy Ralph Palladino, Ilene Winkler, Paula and Dee Meyer and, of course, Geoff, showed up for my reading at Bradley Beach Library. Thank you, Cynthia and Katie, the Bradley Beach Library team, for making this event happen. We started the day with a walk on the beach, went on to the library for stories and conversations about growing up and moving on, the state of the world, etc., etc.—and after that, we ate. Yummy Italian food, what else, at Pagano’s UVA Ristorante in Bradley Beach. Ralph and Ilene are regulars, and Anthony Pagano, the restaurant’s owner, joined us for dinner, drinks and dessert. Another great night.</image:caption>

With two birthday cakes, gifts for the birthday girls, white wine and rose, Megan R’s glorious charcuterie tray and other assorted munchies. We did also discuss the book, My Friends by Fredrik Backman, with a near equal number of thumbs up and down. I was a big thumbs up. <image:caption>I have a lot of people to thank for so much throughout my life. Chatterbox is one lucky girl. In this issue, I have to give a huge shout-out to Paula Howard Meyer and Dee Meyer. These two—the other half of Laverne + Ralph with me and Geoff—have shown up at all but one Chatterbox event. Through rain, snow, sleet and sweltering sun. Paula was my roommate for so many years that when I met Geoff, our parents said they felt like she and I were getting divorced. She created marketing and web materials to support the book, and both she and Dee have provided enormous emotional support—and many fun opportunities for eating too much food and drinking too much wine. Love you both, globs and bunches. I couldn’t have better friends.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX IS ROASTING - Kirkus Reviews gave Chatterbox a “Get It,” and on the strength of the review, my book is not only featured in the online magazine, you’ll find it in the July 1st issue of the print magazine. A big deal, and I’m excited. To build on that, I’m going with a Kirkus Reviews ad campaign. You’ll find Chatterbox ads in the 7/15 and 8/1 online and print magazines, on the website on 7/21- 8/23 and in Kirkus Reviews’ email on 8/5! That takes care of all my mad money for a while, so you can be sure, I’ll be spreading the word on this far and wide.</image:title>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX IS ROASTING - BookLife picked Chatterbox for their Spring 2025/June issue “Cover Crush” series “celebrating the artistry and creativity of indie book covers.” Four stars, bravos and many thank you to Steve Turner—the man behind the cover. Pure genius. The quarterly series “showcases standout designs and highlights the collaboration between authors and cover artists…. we're pulling back the curtain to reveal the creative thinking behind the designs. From visual metaphors to unexpected details, these covers reflect the heart of the stories they represent.” And Chatterbox was top of the list in “Indie Spotlight: Memoirs” in both BookLife and Publishers Weekly.</image:title>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX IS ROASTING - The Italian American Press gave Chatterbox top billing on their website and ran a blurb in their newsletter Tutto Italiano in June. “Blending her Italian American and German Dutch heritage, Barbara offers a collection of her life experiences. From her first story where ‘grandma’s spaghetti and meatballs were worth’ all the adventures and mishaps to get to the ‘kid’s table,’ to the last with a primer on making tomato sauce – noting that if her mother’s family had a coat of arms ‘it would be a bubbling pot of tomato sauce ...’”</image:title>

<image:title>Newsletter - CHATTERBOX IS OVER THE MOON</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a biggie! Chatterbox: Stories from a Noisy Life got a rave review from Kirkus Reviews online edition—and a BUY recommendation. (Kirkus Reviews has been a publishing industry and reader influencer since 1933.) Then, I got this email forwarded from Lauren at Susan Schadt Press: “Congratulations! I'm writing to let you know that your review for CHATTERBOX has been selected by our Indie editors to be included in the upcoming July 1st issue of Kirkus Reviews magazine. Less than 25% of Indie reviews are selected…” for the print magazine. My first thought, was, “Is this real?” It is. I am so excited and proud and will keep you posted on more Kirkus Reviews news coming soon. My favorite excerpt from the review: “... the essays create a vivid pastiche of mid-to-late-20th century Americana. Worton effectively tells her stories in a breezy style, laced with both humor and poignancy. There's a steady confidence in her prose as she meticulously observes and comments on her own actions, the world around her, and occasional esoteric thoughts that have made a home in her brain..." -Kirkus Reviews I am verklempt!</image:caption>

<image:caption>We were at the Dublin Public Library. Thank you, Karen Madigan, Library Director. Linda and I had a blast. Three highlights for me: getting to meet the amazing women who attended this event and swapping stories with them having my sister, Laura Thogode, in the audience and watching her crack-up when I shared stories from our childhoods reading with Linda, always fun. This time each of us shared a story about my mother’s favorite warning for what my happen if we misbehaved, “I’m going to crucify you.” Those stories had everyone in the room, and me and Linda, laughing hysterically</image:caption>

But a chatterbox can’t tell a great story just once, so here’s a quick shout out to I AM Books, Catherine Marenghi and IAWA-Boston. If you’re still wondering where the title Chatterbox came from, here’s a link to the answer. BTW, the photo is from the bookstore’s website. <image:caption>Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi (4 July 1807 – 2 June 1882) was an Italian general, revolutionary and republican. He contributed to Italian unification (Risorgimento) and the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. He is considered to be one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland." Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Garibaldi The second namesake of the museum, Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci (13 April 1808 – 18 October 1889) was an Italian inventor, engineer and an associate of Garibaldi. Meucci is best known for developing, in the Staten Island home that is now the museum, a voice communication apparatus that several sources credit as the first telephone. Between approximately 1850-1854, Meucci and his wife gave Garibaldi refuge in their home. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Meucci</image:caption>

<image:caption>That’s me in the spotlight—okay, fluorescent light—reading. I did a little singing too—yeah, a very dramatic rendition of the last line of “My Way.” I did warn everyone in the bookstore it was coming up. Amazingly, when I threw out my arms à la Sinatra, they applauded, and they laughed. I’m hoping someone took some video, or maybe I should be worried.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - BARBARA IS CHATTERBOX - Sauce or Gravy?</image:title>
<image:caption>Italian Americans have been waging kitchen table wars over whether that tomato stuff that is ladled over pasta is sauce or gravy for ages. Some people say what you call it depends on where your family came from in Italy. Who knows. I come from a sauce family—four generations of women who make a rich, delicious, chock-full of meats and vegetables pasta sauce and men and children who gobble it up happily. Follow me on Instagram @barbaraischatterbox and email me at barbara@barbaraworton.com, and I’ll get back to you with a PDF of my Sunday Sauce recipe.</image:caption>
